Background: AI and large-scale data center development is a gold-rush, developers and Big Tech operating under LLC’s are shopping for places where they can buy land and build data centers as cheaply and as quickly as possible. Indiana has become a hotbed for data center development following favorable state laws including House Enrolled Act 1007, which would allow for electric companies to pass on the costs of data centers’ power needs to existing customers. As of October, AES Indiana had no signed agreements to power new data centers. However, AES is planning to build at least 700 MWs of gas to support potential data center growth. Unfortunately, we lack adequate protections to address data center problems - that’s why we’re seeing MetroBlocks data center being proposed in a residential area and Google’s AI Data Center in Fort Wayne seeking permission to operate 177 diesel-fired generators with no pollution controls. These back-up diesel generators can be a major source of air pollution when operating and can trigger asthma attacks, and result in other health consequences. Thankfully, there is a pause on Franklin Township’s Data Center proposal but there are new data center proposals popping up daily. Unfortunately, we have a potential data center at 7701 Walnut Dr, Indianapolis, IN, 46268 which is surrounded by additional wooded and largely empty parcels, Cause #2025ZON116 zoning link: Department of Metropolitan Development.
