- **Event Description**: National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW), May 3–9, shines a spotlight on the U.S. travel industry’s critical role in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and enhancing the nation’s global competitiveness. “Travel is one of our nation's most powerful economic engines—supporting millions of jobs, fueling businesses, and propelling industries forward,” said Geoff Freeman, President and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association. “National Travel and Tourism Week reinforces the pivotal role travel plays in building a stronger, more prosperous America.”
Since its inception in 1983, NTTW has highlighted the travel industry’s contribution to U.S. economic strength, community vitality, and quality of life. In 2024, the travel industry generated $2.9 trillion in economic output, supported more than 15 million jobs, and produced $190 billion in tax revenue, equivalent to $1,490 per household.

Locally, in 2024, Brunswick County tourism contributes $1.23 billion in visitor spending, saving each resident approximately $524 in state and local taxes while supporting local businesses and fostering long-term economic growth.

The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce celebrates this vital industry each year with the Tourism Counts Ice Cream Social. This year’s event is open to elected officials and the local business community, including both Chamber members and nonmembers, and will be held:
•	Date: Tuesday, May 5
•	Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
•	Location: Southport Community Building

Guests will enjoy ice cream from Sunset Slush of Oak Island and Lil & John’s Sweetreat Homemade Ice Cream while networking with fellow business leaders. The event will feature Jewelean Mustard of Cycle-Logical Tours, who will speak on the importance of tourism for small businesses and its role as the foundation of the local economy.

The Tourism Counts Ice Cream Social is an event of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce. Sponsored by City of Southport Community Relations Department, The Beach House Motel & Suites, Sunset Slush Oak Island, and Lil & John’s Sweetreat Homemade Ice Cream.
