James Allsopp is a versatile, multi-award-winning UK saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer acclaimed for his work across the full spectrum of jazz, from avant-garde to hard bop and world fusion. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, he has collaborated with diverse artists including Polar Bear, Django Bates, The Last Poets, and Jorja Smith.
Allsopp received the BBC Jazz Award for Innovation in 2008 and the Ronnie Scott Jazz Award for Best Newcomer in 2007 for his work with his quintet, Fraud. He also leads the trio The Golden Age of Steam. In addition to performing, he teaches saxophone and clarinet at institutions like the Royal Academy of Music and is a qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique.
The James Allsopp group plays his original compositions and brings together a new lineup featuring trumpeter Chris Batchelor (Loose Tubes) electric bassist Tom Herbert (Polar Bear, Beth Gibbons) percussionist Zands Duggan (Melt Yourself Down) and rising star Dave Storey on drums.
Their album has been produced in collaboration with Ben Lamdin (Nostalgia 77) and the psychedelic, dub aesthetic of the production enhances and deepens the atmosphere of the record.
This is joyous, life affirming music. Deceptively simple, deeply melodic with a healthy dose of the other worldly.
