Amos Peters was a man of mixed Wampanoag and African heritage and a Revolutionary War veteran who moved to Warren, Maine in the early 1780s. He married a local enslaved woman, Sarah, who successfully sued for her freedom in 1784. Sarah and Amos went on to found the community of Peterborough. This talk will discuss how the members of the Peterborough community consistently chose freedom despite the outcomes of the Revolution not meaning freedom for all Americans. It will explore how the community fought for their home and for each other throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries during a time in which slavery expanded throughout the United States and the world.

Dr. Kate McMahon joined Castine Historical Society as the Executive Director in June 2025. She previously served as Historian of Global Slavery and lead historian on the globally traveling exhibition In Slavery’s Wake: Making Black Freedom in the World that opened at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in December 2024. She is committed to exploring the living legacies of slavery and the slave trade in the present day and interpreting this history for a broad public through frequent public speaking engagements and scholarly production.
