DESCRIPTION
Turn unwanted clothing into cozy, one-of-a-kind home décor in this beginner-friendly upcycling workshop.

Students can bring their own sweaters or use some that were donated to Arts in the Burg that deserve a second life. In this class, we’ll transform those garments into soft decorative pillows.

This project is perfect for beginners — even if you’ve never used a sewing machine before. The process is simple and approachable, using basic cutting, pressing, and straight stitching. Students will be guided step-by-step and supported throughout the entire project.

For more experienced sewists, there will also be opportunities to get creative by adding decorative details like appliqué, buttons, ruffles, or combining fabrics for a unique design.

By the end of class, you’ll leave with a finished pillow and a new appreciation for how everyday materials can be transformed into something beautiful.

This is also a wonderful class to attend with a close friend. Bring your bestie, share a table, sip a drink if you’d like (BYOB-friendly), and enjoy a relaxed evening of creativity and making in a supportive environment.

TECHNIQUES
Students will learn the basics of transforming clothing into a simple sewn project. Instruction will cover measuring and cutting fabric from garments, applying fusible interfacing for structure, and assembling the pillow using basic sewing techniques.

Participants will learn how to sew straight seams on a sewing machine, turn a sewn project right-side-out, fill a pillow evenly with fiber fill, and finish the opening with simple hand stitching.

Beginners will have the opportunity to practice basic machine stitching before starting their project, while more experienced students are given the opportunity to incorporate creative embellishments or combine materials for a more customized pillow design.


WHEN
Friday March 13th from 5:30–7:30pm CST

Doors will open 15 minutes prior to class.

MATERIALS
Arts in the Burg will provide a wide selection of sweaters, sweatshirts, and T-shirts from the Cristy’s Closet clothing stash for students to choose from and upcycle.

All materials will be provided including fusible interfacing, fiber fill, thread, sewing needles, pins, rulers, scissors, and washable marking tools. Sewing machines, irons, and ironing boards will also be available for student use during class.

STUDENTS
You must be 10 years or older to attend this class. Students age 13 and older may attend without being accompanied by an adult. Any adult chaperoning a class does not need to purchase a ticket if not participating in the class.

INSTRUCTOR
Jessica Abbruzzese is a sewist, designer, and maker with a passion for natural materials and creative reuse. With a fashion degree and years of sewing, crafting, and costume work behind her, she brings a thoughtful, accessible approach to handmade projects. She is currently working toward her yoga instructor certification and has published yoga & self-care journals, bringing creativity and intentional self-reflection together in her work.
