WHETHER YOU’RE A NATURE ENTHUSIAST OR JUST LOOKING FOR A FUN WAY TO SPEND TIME OUTDOORS, JOIN US FOR A WINTER TREE IDENTIFICATION ADVENTURE!
Winter is an ideal season to learn how to identify trees and shrubs. Without leaves, we can focus on the details that often go unnoticed: branch structure, buds, bark patterns, and the overall shape and characteristics of each tree.
This guided hike will be led by a knowledgeable team of forestry professionals: Renee Penny, District Manager with the KCD; Marshall Moore, District Forester with the KCD; and Ellie Johnson, Outreach Forester with the Michigan Forest Association. As we hike approximately one mile of trail at the South Boardman Nature Preserve, we’ll take a closer look at tree bark, branches, and buds, with opportunities to deepen your understanding along the way.
The South Boardman Nature Preserve is located off Butler Rd SW in South Boardman. From US-131, travel east on Boardman Rd, then turn south onto School St. School St becomes Butler Rd, continue for about half a mile, and the preserve will be on the west side of the road.
Please dress for the weather, as we will be outdoors for the duration of the event. We will primarily stay on the trail, with optional opportunities to step off-trail for a closer look at specific trees.
This event will take place rain, snow, or shine, unless a winter weather advisory is in effect. In the event of severe weather, please check your email the morning of the hike or text your name to 231-564-9055 to receive a cancellation notice via text.
This is a FREE event and is open to anyone interested in learning more about trees.
