Bill Hurd is an accomplished jazz saxophonist and flute player known for his work as an ophthalmologist and his illustrious career as a world-class sprinter for Notre Dame. He has played with jazz greats like Kirk Whalum and Isaac Hayes, recorded multiple jazz albums, and continues to perform regularly.
Bill Hurd, a 1969 Notre Dame graduate, is a retired eye doctor in Memphis, Tennessee. He is also the fastest sprinter in Notre Dame history, setting the University’s records for the 100 meter dash in 1968 (10.27 seconds) and the 200 meter dash in 1969 (20.4 seconds), times which remain the best ever at Notre Dame more than five decades later. Hurd won the Outstanding Saxophonist award at Notre Dame’s 1966 Collegiate Jazz Festival, performing in a sextet with Larry Dwyer, and has remained an active musician ever since. At Notre Dame he majored in electrical engineering, later deciding on a career in ophthalmology. Dr. Hurd’s medical practice has included volunteer work, participating in summer medical missions to underserved countries, including Mexico, Brazil, China, South Africa, Senegal, and Madagascar, restoring sight to thousands of patients. Bill Hurd is receiving the 2025 Inspiration Award from the Knute Rockne Memorial Society.
