An ekphrastic poem is a vivid written response to a work of art, inviting poets to imagine, interpret, and expand upon the meaning of a painting or scultpure through language. By reflecting on the "action" within an artwork, poets create new layers of understanding and connection.
Individuals of all ages are invited to participate by writing a poem inspired by a work of art on view in the galleries. All submissions are reviewed and selected poems will be published in a commemorative chapbook. Chosen poets will also be invited to read their work aloud during our annual poetry reading event held in the SBMA galleries.
***A Special Focus for Our 11th Year/ A Change from Previous Years***
In past years, poets were invited to write in response to any work in the Museum’s permanent collection. This year, in honor of 11 years of Ekphrastic poetry at SBMA, the program has been intentionally shaped to celebrate its history. Poets are invited to write exclusively in response to 11 selected works from the collection.
These 11 works were chosen by the community based on their lasting inspiration over the past eleven years. They are the most frequently written about artworks since the program’s inception and reflect the pieces that have resonated most deeply with participants throughout the life of the program.
