Learn about the history, symbolism, and protocol of the ribbon skirt (or shirt), a traditional Indigenous clothing worn by women. Each skirt is made up of fabric and multiple ribbon colours. The ribbons represent many meanings and together, the skirt can tell a story.  Similarly, ribbon shirts represent cultural symbolism and heritage. Ribbon shirts can symbolize unity, pride, and resilience.

Ribbon skirts and shirts are important cultural expressions that help to preserve and celebrate the First Peoples’ traditions, customs, and history. They serve as a powerful form of artistic and cultural expression and play a crucial role in asserting and maintaining cultural identity.

In this three-day program open to everyone, you will be provided with all the materials necessary (including appliqués) to create your very own ribbon skirt or shirt. There is a $55 supply fee included in the registration fee. Please bring your own sewing machine; there will be some available for a $20 rental fee payable to the facilitator. Please indicate at the time of registration if you will require a sewing machine and what your skirt or shirt size is.

On Friday, March 13, you can check in to your room at the Sorrento Centre at 4 pm. At 7 pm, we will gather in the Richardsons’ Conference room. On Sunday, March 15, check out from your room is 10 am; class continues to lunch at 12:30 pm.

Accommodations and meals at Sorrento Retreat and Conference Centre can be purchased when you register.
