Screening in 4K with The Silence of the Lambs (4K) as part of our Kurt & Jodie double feature series.

The Thing is not only John Carpenter and Kurt Russell’s greatest collaboration, it is perhaps the greatest remake, and arguably the greatest sci-fi/horror film ever made. Critically panned and a box-office disappointment when it was released in 1982, it experienced one of the fastest reappraisals in the history of cinema, going from minor flop to the top of countless “Best of” lists in just a few years.

Russell plays R. J. MacReady, a helicopter pilot stationed with a group of American researchers in Antarctica who encounter an extraterrestrial life-form that assimilates, then imitates, other organisms. “The Thing” arrives at the facility in the form of a dog being chased by a Norwegian helicopter pilot trying desperately to prevent it from reaching the Americans. This intriguing opening is followed by the introduction of all the men inhabiting the facility. Each character is distinctively drawn by screenwriter Bill Lancaster and brought to life by an extraordinary ensemble of character actors. Once these twelve men, entirely cut off from the outside world, discover a creature that wants to take them over has infiltrated their odd little community, they are left in an impossible situation. If they trust each other and cooperate, they may be deceived by those team members who are no longer themselves. Yet if they separate from the main group, they make themselves more susceptible to attack.

Based on John W. Campbell Jr.’s short story “Who Goes There?” and paying homage to the first adaptation of this material, the Howard Hawks/Christian Nyby production The Thing from Another World (1951), Carpenter crafts the ultimate paranoid thriller, which can be read as a metaphor for the societal fears of each passing decade. Though unquestionably a product of the early ʼ80s, this effects-heavy film transcends its era in ways few genre pictures ever can. Because of the nature of Carpenter’s monster—which, like the one depicted in the original short story, can perfectly imitate any living creature down to the smallest detail—the film taps into ageless concepts around paranoia, spread of disease, polarization by a toxic political ideology, betrayal by friends, distrust of authority, and the fear that what we hold most true might be a lie. The Thing is a timeless horror movie because it isn’t a direct allegory for any one fear, but rather a meditation on identity, set in a cloistered community where ideas about nationality, class, race, gender, and rank have already been blurred or forsaken.

Russell’s MacReady is the ideal embodiment of values that Americans used to embrace and embody. He is a man of action whose abilities to think quickly and fight when necessary are complemented by an astute pragmatism and an even temperament. MacReady is the guy you want on your side, even if his wits and strength may not be enough to overcome the impossible situation he finds himself in.
