Jodie Foster gives one of her most-loved performances as the lead character from Carl Sagan’s novel about radio astronomer Eleanor Arroway, who discovers evidence of extraterrestrial life and is chosen to make first contact. Sagan and his wife Ann Druyan tried for years to get a film adaptation of the book produced, with many directors and screenwriters coming on board and working on it before it finally was made by former Used Cars director Robert Zemeckis as the follow up to his Best Picture winning hit Forest Gump.

Whether or not the special-effects-obsessed Zemeckis was the ideal director for this thoughtful material about the distinctly American conflict between science, religion, and politics is debatable, but it’s hard to imagine anyone giving as compelling a performance in the lead role as Foster. She makes Ellie a warm and passionate screen presence, and a deeply human scientist character whom we can’t help but empathize with and fall in love with. The somewhat miscast Matthew McConaughey is less appealing, playing the Christian philosopher Palmer Joss, with whom Ellie becomes romantically involved.
