About the event

What does the horse say?
Step into a day of discovery and transformation with the renowned Dr Sue Dyson, as we delve into the vital difference between training challenges and pain related gait dysfunction in the ridden horse.

Every horse that struggles to perform at its best invites us—as coaches, riders, and equine professionals—to deepen our understanding. Developing the ability to truly see and hear what a horse is communicating is one of the most powerful skills an equestrian can cultivate. It’s the key to recognising whether a training approach needs refining or whether a horse is quietly signalling discomfort.

Throughout this inspiring training day, you’ll be introduced to the Ridden Horse Performance Checklist (also known as the Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram)—a ground breaking tool designed to empower you to distinguish between rider related issues, training problems, and signs of pain. These insights will enrich your daily practice, strengthen communication with students and clients, and ultimately help every horse you work with reach its fullest performance potential while safeguarding its welfare.

Dr Sue Dyson MA, VetMB, PhD, DEO
A graduate of the University of Cambridge, Sue completed an internship at the University of Pennsylvania before returning to the UK to join the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket. For 37 years she led its world class lameness and poor performance service, shaping modern understanding of equine biomechanics and welfare. Since 2019, she has continued her mission as an independent consultant, blending exceptional horsemanship with deep veterinary expertise to help horses thrive.
Sue is an accomplished rider who has produced horses to top national level in both eventing and show jumping, and is a BHS Stage 5 Coach.
