What: If you want to love water color paint, but you can’t achieve the bright colors and
contrast you’re looking for, you may want to try gouache! If you've ever heard of
gouache, chances are you’ve wondered what the heck it is, and how it’s pronounced!
Loved by illustrators for its bright, juicy pigment, gouache is like a cousin to water color
paint with very different properties.
I have been painting with gouache for 10+ years, and I love to push its limits.
Come learn why it is my favorite to work with!
About the Instructor: Rebecca Marella is a multi-disciplinary artist based on the Maine
Coast. Rebecca's background is in darkroom printing & analog photography, however
her artistic career has evolved her to also become a painter, illustrator, designer, and
muralist. Inspired by the throws of life's unexpected highs and lows, Rebecca weaves
together pictures and scenes of seafaring mermaids and oceanic wanderlust. With a
more sensitive look, Rebecca's artwork explores a romance with yourself - finding
strength, light, and complexity from within even at the darkest of times. As a freelance
artist, Rebecca creates creative work for individual and commercial clients, and takes
commissions for custom artwork and large scale murals in her unique style. In her work
as a wedding & events photographer, she doesn't smother her artistic flair. Rebecca
values connecting with the client and reflecting the vision of her client with her camera.

I. Introduction (15 minutes)
A. Welcome and introduction of the instructor
B. Overview of the workshop goals and objectives
C. Brief introduction of participants (icebreaker activity)
II. Supplies Overview (15 minutes)
*All materials will be provided but you may also bring your own.
Materials Recommended:
1. Cold or Hot Pressed Water Color Paper (Michaels: Canson I like painting on: Arches)
*Cold pressed is a bit textured, while hot pressed is smooth
2. Gouache Paints **NOT Acrylic Gouache - its different. (I will have some, but it is
good if you buy some. Whatever is at Michaels/Hobby Lobby is fine, by brands I like are:
Holbein, or Windsor & Newton)
3. A pencil & eraser, if you want one
Materials Provided:
1. Watercolor Paint Brushes
2. Water Cups & Paint pallets
3. Papertowels
4. Masking tape
III. Techniques and Demonstration (30 minutes)
A. 30-minute live demonstration by the instructor will include
1. Introduction to gouache paint and its properties
2. Explanation of techniques, different papers and paint brushes.
3. Showcasing different color blending and layering methods
4. Demonstration of the class objective
B. Q&A session about techniques demonstrated
IV. Creating! (90 minutes)
A. Participants follow along with the demo painting, or create their own vision.
B. Guided work session begins
1. Participants begin creating artwork, with step by step assistance from the instructor.
2. Instructor circulates to provide individual assistance and feedback
3. Encouragement to experiment with different textures and colors
4. Discussion is encouraged! :) oos and aahs!
C. Tips and techniques shared throughout the process to enhance art pieces
V. Completion and Display (15 minutes)
A. Final touches on individual projects
B. Setting up for a mini art gallery showcase for participants (arrange the finished pieces
on the tables for a critique)
VI. Wrap-Up and Conclusion (15 minutes)
A. Group sharing session
1. Participants showcase and discuss their finished artwork
2. Feedback and encouragement among peers
B. Recap of skills learned and resources for further exploration
C. Information about upcoming workshops or related classes
