🍁 Expedition Monongahela - Autumn Adventure

West Virginia | 3 Days of Exploration, History & Epic Scenery

This expedition was created by the one and only Jerry Bain, West Virginia's biggest advocate for tourism and sustainable off-roading! Thanks for creating such an epic adventure!

This expedition is rated a 4 ( Requiring 33" tires or larger ) Trailers are welcome with articulating style hitch couplers

Come join us as we explore the breathtaking landscapes of the Monongahela National Forest at the peak of autumn color in West Virginia. This multi-day adventure blends scenic backroads, historic landmarks, iconic hikes, and unforgettable camping-all paired with great company and classic OP camaraderie.

From steam-powered railroads and world-famous observatories to rugged mountain trails, fire towers, waterfalls, and cozy camps with modern amenities, this experience is designed for those who crave both adventure and connection.

Thursday – History, Railroads & Stars

Meeting Point: Inn at Snowshoe 10 Snowshoe Dr, Slaty Fork, WV 26291

Time: 8:00 AM

8:00 AM – Registration & Event Briefing
Meet the group, check in, and review the adventure ahead.

Morning – Caravan to Cass Scenic Railroad
Travel together to the historic Cass Railroad, where we’ll enjoy a short ride aboard one of the legendary Shay series steam locomotives, a true piece of Appalachian history.

Midday – Green Bank Observatory
Visit the world-renowned Green Bank Observatory, founded in 1957. Highlights include:

The 85-foot Tatel Telescope

The massive 300-foot radio telescope

The 140-foot dish featuring the world’s largest roller bearing.
Learn about the National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ), designated in 1958 to protect radio astronomy from interference.

Afternoon – Scenic Drive Across Rural West Virginia
Enjoy winding roads and fall colors as we make our way across the countryside to Spruce Knob- (West Virginia's Highest Elevation)

Evening – Camp at Old Woodlands Institute
Set up camp in a private meadow nestled just below 4,400 feet in elevation.

Hot showers & flushing toilets

Group fire

Social hour under the stars

Friday – Distillery, General Store , Iconic Peaks

Morning – Lazy Start
Enjoy a relaxed morning at camp before hitting the road.

Late Morning – Still Hollow Distillery
Stop for a quick distillery tour and learn about local Appalachian spirits.

Lunch – Yokum’s General Store

A meal stop at the historic Yokum’s General Store, a West Virginia classic.

Afternoon – Seneca Rocks Hike (Optional)
For those looking to stretch their legs:

2.6 miles round-trip

~700 ft elevation gain

Stunning summit views at 2,400 feet
One of the most iconic hikes in the state.

Late Afternoon – Dolly Sods / Bear Rocks Preserve
A steep but beautiful drive leads us to Bear Rocks Preserve for epic photo opportunities and sweeping views.

Evening – Camp in Canaan Valley
Private, reserved campground featuring:

Hot showers & flushing toilets

Group fire

Another evening of stories, laughter, and unforgettable camaraderie.

Saturday – Trails, Towers , Waterfalls

Morning – Slow Start & Epic OP Coffee Bar ☕
Ease into the day with OP’s epic coffee bar, fueling up for adventure.

Midday – Canaan Valley Loop Trail
Tackle this rugged and scenic trail
⚠️ 33” tires minimum required

Stops Along the Way:

Blackwater Falls - One of West Virginia’s most beautiful waterfalls

Fuel Stop + Famous Pepperoni Rolls – Home to West Virginia’s #1 rated pepperoni rolls

Burgess Falls – More scenic photo opportunities

Afternoon – Canyon Rim Road , Olson Fire Tower

Travel the Canyon Rim Road and climb the decommissioned Olson Fire Tower for incredible panoramic views.

Evening – Final Camp is on the Cheat River
Our last night together at a private riverside camp featuring:

Hot showers & flushing toilets

Group fire

A perfect closing night to an unforgettable adventure
