Snow Lake may be one of the most popular hikes in the state, but our shortened version to the ridge lookout offers all the grandeur with a little less effort. At 4.6 miles round-trip, this route still delivers sweeping views of Snow Lake itself and the surrounding peaks of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. It’s a perfect introduction to high country hiking in July, when snow is (mostly) gone, and the alpine meadows are waking up.

Early July can still bring patches of snow on the upper switchbacks, so trekking poles and sturdy shoes are recommended. The lake often holds chunks of ice well into summer, making the view from the ridge all the more striking. With wildflowers blooming along the trail, it’s a reminder that the high country is truly alive this time of year.

This hike climbs about 1,200 feet, but since we’re stopping at the ridge, it avoids the steeper descent down to the lake basin. That means more time to enjoy the views, snap photos, and soak up the fresh mountain air without feeling pressed to push on.

We’ll meet at the Alpental Ski Area parking lot at 9:15 am. It’s a popular place, so early arrival is key to finding a spot. Bring layers — the ridge can be breezy even on a warm day.

Snow Lake — Washington Trails Association

We can meet in the far north end of the north parking lot at the Green Lake Park and Ride, and directly under the I-5 freeway at 8 am. Since we are heading east, we can also stop off at the Eastgate Outback Steakhouse at 8:30 am to either pick up additional riders or further coordinate rideshares. Rideshare for the day is $16 per person from the Green Lake Park n Ride and $12 per person from the Eastgate Outback Steakhouse and is paid to the driver of the vehicle.

Yes, there are two separate fees regarding this event. The event fee, and then a rideshare if you are riding as a passenger with a driver.

Sorry, no doggies are allowed at any Tenderfoot Adventures events as per our insurance policy. We all love our fur babies, and I am sure that yours is amazing as well, but alas, there are no doggies allowed at any of our events.
