While there are officially 13 named characters (see below), this show offers a lot of great ensemble opportunities to create unique characters, possibly be involved in fight choreography, and bring this story fully to life. All casting is open; if you can be it, then you can read for it.

Character Breakdown:
Napoleon: A strong-willed, quietly intimidating pig who becomes one of the leaders of Animal Farm.
Snowball: An idealistic, passionate pig who helps lead the animal revolution and works toward a better life for all animals. Appears in Act One; can possibly be double-cast with another role.
Squealer: A charismatic, disarmingly charming, good-humored pig who becomes the spokesanimal for the pigs. Must be comfortable with a lot of lines.
Boxer: A loyal carthorse known for his size, sweet nature, and gentleness.
Clover: A warm, empathetic horse who becomes the moral center of the farm. Must be comfortable with light singing.
Mollie: A vain, playful prize horse known for their love of sugar cubes & ribbons. Does not fully understand what the Revolution will mean for them
Benjamin: A cynical, observant, intelligent donkey. The only animal, other than the pigs, who can fully read.
Moses: A raven raised by humans who leads the farm in chants and tells them stories of a place beyond the clouds.
Old Major: The prize boar whose dream begins the animals' revolution. Only appears in Act One, Scene One; possibly double-cast with another role. Must be comfortable with a long monologue and some singing.
The Storyteller: An aloof animal who acts as the guide for the audience in recounting the events that have happened.
Minimus: A young pig with a gift for spoken word. Performs an “epic” poem in Act Two. Good for a first-time actor not afraid to appear silly.
Pilkington: A neighboring farmer who comes to see Animal Farm for himself. Only appears at the end of Act Two; possibly double-cast with another role.
Jones: The original owner of Manor Farm. This is a movement-based role that appears in the first few scenes of Act One.
