Workshop 1. 1:30- 2:30 - “Lightning Bolts”
Flashes of inspiration are rare, mysterious, fleeting and sacred.
They can be the most thrilling aspect of songwriting and, the most illusive.
I believe the jolt of inspiration is your soul talking. It has something to say.
We’ll talk about how to encourage these lightning bolts to arrive more often, how to capture them, and how to use them to bring a song into the world.
My favourite way of songwriting is to “write from the title”. I do this by grabbing the gift of the lightning bolt and using it as my starting point for the rest of the song.
I try to solve the puzzle the title presents. I try to defend my thesis by wringing out every possible colour, emotion, essence and subtext, to create a song that is hopefully emotionally present, cinematic and relatable. I hope we explore this method together, so you can create a song the initial inspiration hinted at.
Once the lightning stops, the real journey begins…
Workshop 2. 2:45-3:55 - “We’ll do Patterns, Prosody & a question Period”
We’ll talk about power structures in rhyming patterns, verses, bridges and choruses. Chords/grooves.
We’ll discuss “prosody”, the combining of lyric and music to create atmosphere. Co-writing.
We'll do a question period...ask me anything...regarding songwriting.
We'll discuss any issues that are getting in your way.
Workshop 3. 4:00-6:00 - “1:1 Part 1”
One-on-one sessions with Lynn. Everyone gets 15 minutes of undivided attention. Be prepared and organized to get the most from Lynn's experience.
Workshop 4. 4:00-6:00 - “Bag ‘o Tricks” - Group event moderated by George Tierney
Reach into the bag, grab a random object and write about it. We’ll do a series of free-write exercises and games that will allow everyone to share their skills, styles, successes and failures. We can create something new or bring something you’re stuck on for some group input. Let the creativity flow.
Dinner at The Goose & Gridiron 6:30 (Pay your own way)
8:30 - “SATURDAY NIGHT KITCHEN PARTY”
We’ve got a big Tub ‘o Tunes! That’s over 100 songs, plenty of copies of each to share and we’ll jam the night away.
