Richard Freeman is a working cryptozoologist, author and explorer. He searches for and writes about unknown animals. The melodramatic may call him a monster hunter. He is the Zoological Director at the Centre for Fortean Zoology, the world’s only full time mystery animal research organization. Richard is also a regular contributor to the magazine Fortean Times. He has written books about cryptozoology, folklore and monsters and has recently branched out into horror and fantasy novels.
We'll be kicking off 2026 with flying objects of a different kind to usual! The dragon is the great, great grand-daddy of all monsters. Forget about demons, vampires and zombies, the dragon predates all of these and indeed all other monsters. The earliest dragon legends have been traced to South Africa and date back some 75,000 years! This most powerful, ancient and widespread of monster appears in every culture and country on Earth.
Over the years many theories of what lies behind dragon lore have been offered. The fossil bones of dinosaurs and other huge extinct animals, meetings with huge crocodiles and pythons or a metaphor for 'energies' running through the earth. None of them really cut the mustard as explanations for the dragon phenomena. Most people, at least in the West, would think that the dragon is a creature of folklore with no basis in reality. Yet people all over the world claim to have encountered dragons in the modern age. Richard has been collecting these accounts for some time. In this talk he will examine dragon lore worldwide, modern day sightings and what may lurk behind the stories.
In addition to his talk there will be a dragon themed raffle and UFO updates from Chairman Dave and investigators James and Ian. So come and start the new year in style with a varied and interesting evening, whether you've attended BUFOG before or not!
