Are you a fair-weather backpacker, but wonder if you might like backpacking during the winter too? It doesn't take that much more knowledge and skill to be just as warm and comfortable on winter trips, allowing you to extend your backpacking season to the entire year. There's nothing like enjoying the muffled snow-covered terrain and the views that go on forever without the leaves on the trees to get in your way. This intro-level winter backpacking trip is a perfect first-ever winter trip, or if you haven't camped out in the cold weather in many years, to take it easy, try out gear, and refresh on skills.

This is an easy 1-night backpacking trip with a round-trip total of 3.5 miles and 700' of elevation change. Most of our time will be in camp learning and connecting. We'll be teaching winter skills like how winter might change your backpack size requirement, tent, quilt or sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cook system, getting drinking water, and other gear considerations. We'll learn how we need to prepare for and adjust our clothing layers to be comfortable, as well as choose and prepare a snowy campsite, and travel using traction devices like microspikes and snowshoes while carrying heavier backpacks.

Don't have winter gear yet? Not a problem. You can use your same 3-season tent. You can put a closed-cell foam sleeping pad under your usual air pad for additional insulation from the ground. You can layer quilts and sleeping bags for sufficient warmth. We'll teach how to use white gas stoves and have them for you to try.

The guides will have the important gear like first aid kits, fire kits, water filters, and stoves/cooking gear. All you need to bring is your tent, sleeping bag or quilt, a small pillow, a headlamp, 4 liters of water in bottles, food & snacks, eating utensils, personal toiletries, clothing for the weather, and hiking boots. A detailed packing list will be emailed to students after registration, and you can contact us with any questions.

Join us for a challenging winter overnight adventure and meet new friends to plan future adventures with!

Minimum Age: 12 years old - the minor(s) and a parent/guardian must all be paid registered participants.
