Adding a second night allows us to safely test our comfort zone. We’re at a new level of trip planning with multiple campsites, more water sources, more food, and more importance placed on lightening our load. It also provides more opportunities to learn as we travel longer and farther.
This is a moderate 2-night backpacking trip with a roundtrip total of 13 miles and 2,700' of elevation change. We'll have fun scrambles along the rocky ridgeline so we'll be teaching about footwork and scrambling tactics, inclement weather, clothing and layering, repairing gear, risk management, personal safety gear, and any other topics that come up.
Students are progressing into more of a lead role while instructors take a backseat approach to allow more opportunities for good decision-making. We’ll cement our basic skill sets and increase our self-confidence to plan and enjoy future independent treks.
We’ll dial ourselves in and hike up the ridge on our first day to set up camp at dark. We’ll then wake to a full day of backpacking while we explore the surrounding streams, lakes, and viewpoints. A second night of learning allows students to get in the reps and hone their skills one more time before we head back to the real world the next day. By the trip’s conclusion, students can expect to feel secure in their abilities, proficient in their skills, and self-reliant in the outdoors for a full weekend.
Minimum Gear: 50-70 liter backpack, shelter (tent, tarp shelter, bivy, or hammock), sleeping bag, sleeping pad, small pillow, lighter, water bottles or bladder for 2-3 liters of water, water filter, small knife, 75’ paracord, cell phone with USB charger & cable, headlamp & extra batteries, canister stove & fuel, cooking pot, utensils, food & snacks, bear hang food bag, first aid kit, personal toiletries, clothing for the weather, & hiking boots. A detailed packing list will be emailed to students after registration and you can contact us with any questions.
