In this thought-provoking lecture, acclaimed poet and scholar Peter McDonald delves into Yeats’ enduring fascination with the Otherworld—a realm of spirits, shadows, and contradictions. “The World’s Bane” explores how Yeats constructed a visionary landscape defined as much by tension and resistance as by beauty and transcendence.

Drawing on poetry, myth, and metaphysics, McDonald brings fresh insight to the dualities at the heart of Yeats’ work.

Born in Belfast in 1962, Peter McDonald is an acclaimed poet, scholar, and critic, known for his work on W.B. Yeats and other prominent poets. He currently holds the prestigious Christopher Tower Studentship in Poetry at Christ Church, Oxford
