- **Event Description**: Join acclaimed New Yorker cartoonist and author Ken Krimstein for a powerful talk on his graphic nonfiction book When I Grow Up: The Lost Autobiographies of Six Yiddish Teenagers. Krimstein will share the extraordinary story of autobiographies written by Jewish youths in 1930s Yiddishuania (Lithuania) for a YIVO Institute contest. These manuscripts were nearly lost to history during the Nazi invasion, and were later hidden from the Soviets for decades before being rediscovered in 2017. Krimstein will reveal how he transformed six of these long-forgotten voices into poignant narratives that capture both the aspirations of their young authors and the tragic loss of Yiddishuania’s culture in the Holocaust.  

In addition, Krimstein will address the history of storytelling through cartoons, why he chose to go in that direction as an artist, and the increasing popularity of graphic novels.
