Thereβs an irony that cuts to the bone on Far From Nowhere, the new album from the critically acclaimed singer, songwriter and guitarist Josienne Clarke. Long admired for her crystalline voice and unflinching lyrical gaze, Clarke has always had an ability to evoke a communal melancholy. But with this LP, recorded at a remote Scottish cabin, sheβs achieved the feat of stripping away the barriers between artist and listener. What emerges is a record of remarkable intimacy and integrity as Clarke embraces stillness and vulnerability. She sought total isolation but ended up creating something even more profoundly connective.
Clarke has always been unafraid to ask questions with no clear answers, and here she gives herself no hiding place. In that sense, this is her most complete artistic statement yet as she spins rawness into elegance. While she admits it may not join the pantheon of classic isolation records β βIβm not in control of the historic time and wider context in which Iβm creating and itβs not for me to be diverted by whether my output has any place in popularity,β she says β it still sits firmly in the lineage of Bruce Springsteenβs Nebraska, Bon Iverβs For Emma, Forever Ago, and the lo-fi solo work of Adrianne Lenker.
Additional to Josienneβs performance, will be a screening of βDeludedβ, a classic recording studio fly-on-the-ointment documentary, showing moments when creative sparks fly. It also contains interviews with Josienne, sharing insights, inspirations & progress. Finally, DELUDED burrows into Josienneβs optimism & defiance, beaten so many times by a careless industry but still resolute, still making beautiful music. Itβs all she knows how to do. Shot on a shoestring budget by a small crew with portable kit β you wonβt hear the album in full. Instead, youβll hear mistakes, the bits in-between the songs, alternative takes, and room mic catches of the songs on the album. Thereβs all the fun, self-doubt & creative juice you could wish for. Itβll leave you a mess, furious with the injustice and lack of care provision rife in the creative arts but keen to while away the hours listening to the album.
