On the first day, participants extract pigments from natural dye materials; on the second day, they use those pigments to make paints. Along the way, students gain an understanding of the basic chemistry, handling, challenges, and joys of natural dye extraction. Once the paints are prepared, the class shares results and creates color samples on fabric and paper. Students leave with their samples, along with recipes for making their own plant-based paints.All materials will be provided.No natural dye experience required.For ages 16 and older. Those under age 16 may attend accompanied by an adult.About the Instructor:Amanda Lee is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in printmaking, painting, book arts, and photography. She is Assistant Professor of Painting and Printmaking at University of Washington, Seattle. Lee earned an MFA at Indiana University, Bloomington, and was the recipient of the inaugural Virginia A. Myers Visiting Artist / Visiting Assistant Professorship in Printmaking at the University of Iowa.
