Barbara Kopple's 1976 documentary about a coal miners' strike in Harlan County, Kentucky. It won the Academy Award for best documentary. This is the 50th anniversary 4K restoration. 

1 hour 43 minutes. Rated PG.

In 1973 the miners at the Brookside mine voted to join the United Mine Workers. Duke Power, which owned the mine through its Eastover subsidiary, would not sign a contract. The miners struck, lasting thirteen months.

Kopple went down there planning to film something else and ended up staying with the families for the whole strike. She and her crew slept in the hollers and walked the picket line at four in the morning. The company brought in strikebreakers and armed men.

The women of Harlan County are the heart of the picture. They organized the Brookside Women's Club, ran the picket line when the men were under a court order, and took beatings and jail for it. Kopple filmed them arguing with each other, with the sheriff and with their husbands.

The music is Hazel Dickens, Merle Travis, Sarah Ogan Gunning and Florence Reece. Reece wrote "Which Side Are You On" during an earlier Harlan County strike in the thirties, on a calendar in her kitchen, while the sheriff's men were outside her house looking for her husband.
