Black perspectives in particular have differed throughout the country’s history, as communities grappled with the meaning of freedom when people were recently removed from slavery but continuing to experience racism in many forms.  

As Sioux City grew and became settled by Black people from a variety of regions, they brought their own traditions for celebrating emancipation and built new community events. Explore these events with guest speaker Maggie Hardnett Reinert at History at High Noon: Black Perspectives on Celebrating Independence 1881 to 1935, on September 17 from 12:05-1:00 p.m.

History at High Noon is a popular lunchtime photo-based program series held on the third Thursday of each month at 12:05 p.m. at the Sioux City Public Museum. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunches to enjoy during these free presentations.
