𝐒𝐚𝐮𝐥 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐬 is an American poet, rapper, actor, and musician known for his powerful blend of spoken word, hip-hop, and alternative music. Emerging from New York's slam poetry scene, he gained acclaim with his 1998 debut album "Amethyst Rock Star," produced by Rick Rubin. Williams' work, including albums like "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!" and "Volcanic Sunlight," is celebrated for its thought-provoking lyrics and genre-defying sound. As a versatile artist, he has also acted in films like "Slam" and authored several books of poetry, establishing himself as a profound and influential voice in contemporary art and culture.
Carlos Niño is a prolific album producer, expansive percussionist, experimental composer, connector, communicator, known primarily for his main project 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐬 𝐍𝐢𝐧̃𝐨 & 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬, and for his extensive work on André 3000's New Blue Sun, as well as working on albums with Laaraji, Idris Ackamoor, Adam Rudolph and countless other figures of the experimental jazz scene and beyond.
Longtime friends and creative mates (since 1997), Williams and Niño finally marked a first collaborative release this summer with 𝙎𝙖𝙪𝙡 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙢𝙨 𝙢𝙚𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙤𝙨 𝙉𝙞𝙣̃𝙤 & 𝙁𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙖𝙩 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙋𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚, the recording of a sound ceremony held on December 18th 2024 beneath oak and black walnut trees in Coldwater Canyon Park on the grounds of longstanding Los Angeles conservationist organization TreePeople.
For the occasion, Niño had assembled a trusted ensemble as his “Friends” : Nate Mercereau (guitar synth, live sampling), Aaron Shaw and Kamasi Washington (winds), Andres Renteria (percussion), Maia (vibraphone, voice), and Francesca Heart (digital sound design). Together, they wove an electro-acoustic tapestry, with Williams’ prophetic poetics guiding and dissolving into the group’s meditative improvisation.
