Seminar on Malaysian Elections

About the Seminar

Malaysia’s 14th General Elections (GE14) are gearing up to be a contest on multiple fronts. Consequently, ISEAS is approaching its analysis of these elections from three angles: campaign dynamics; political issues facing different interest groups; and trends and developments in a key set of states.

This event will focus on the first and second of these aspects. With regard to key campaign dynamics, popularity is expected to ride heavily on economic policy and credible leadership. At the same time, electoral boundaries are also being redrawn, entrenching rural bias and altering the ethnic composition of various constituencies. A further curious development concerns young voters, who have in past elections leaned towards regime change but have recently expressed disinterest in electoral politics.

With regard to trends and issues affecting different interest groups, this seminar will have presentations on political trends and electoral dynamics among minority communities. While much attention has focussed of late on the Malay community, the sentiment among other communities is rather more low-key. Among Indian and Chinese voters, fatigue and disengagement, and perhaps even swings back to the BN, may tilt the balance and favour the ruling coalition. Conversely, Sabah and Sarawak effectively delivered victory to the incumbents in the 13th General Elections. Whether this trend holds or some shift takes place, the leanings of the indigenous population will weigh heavily again.

For this seminar, the ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute is pleased to bring together a lineup of speakers, sharing perspectives on salient issues and population groups, and their implications for GE14.
