Point & Shoot 2018: A Short Film Competition


Organised by nuSTUDIOS Film Productions (a member of NUS Centre For The Arts)

POINT & SHOOT is the ultimate short film competition: Teams must plan, shoot, edit, and submit the best 3-minute short film in fewer than 55 hours upon the release of a given theme. Open to all pre-university and tertiary institution students.

Stand to win up to S$10,000 worth of prizes, including a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and the Aputure LS-1s!

6.30PM – Registration & Theme Release
Gather all your crew members to register and pay sign-up fees. After a briefing, the theme for this year’s competition will be revealed — and we’re off!

Venue: JTC Launchpad @ one-north

16-18 MARCH: SHOOT
ALL DAY & NIGHT – Film Production
Begin shooting the moment you’ve received the theme or take it slow and brainstorm for the best script idea before filming over the next two days.

18 MARCH (SUN): SUBMIT
11.59PM – Submission Deadline
Shoot and edit your short film (3 mins or less) and submit it online by midnight!

31 MARCH (SAT): WIN
Keep your fingers crossed for the Point & Shoot 2018: Finale — a screening of the Top Ten shorts (as decided by our jury) and an awards ceremony awaits. Refreshments will be provided!

Exclusive only to Point & Shoot Participants! Hone your skills in two exclusive workshops by Blackmagic Design in the lead-up to Point & Shoot.

DaVinci Resolve 14 Workshop – 24 February, 10am-5pm
Includes:
- Editing
- Colour Grading
This workshop is suitable for people who are keen to learn editing and colour grading in DaVinci Resolve.
Participants will be given footages to work on using the workshop.

Blackmagic Camera Workshop – 3 March, 10am-5pm
Includes:
- Understanding Professional Codecs and Dynamic Range
- Practical shoots with URSA Mini and Pocket Cinema Camera.
- Editing and Grading with DaVinci Resolve
This workshop is suitable for people who are keen to learn about how to achieve professional quality footages through codecs and dynamic range.
Participants will have hands-on session with Blackmagic Design’s cameras such as URSA Mini Pro, Pocket Cinema Camera.
This will be followed by a basic editing and grading post-production session.
Laptops will be provided

DON ARAVIND
Don Aravind started experimenting with the video camera since the age of 14 where he was tasked to shoot school events. This interest pushed him to pursue a formal training in both traditional and digital filmmaking. In 2006, his short film titled "UNCALLED" received a special mention at the NOKIA RESFest10 Handheld Cinema Competition. In 2009, his short film "SAKKARANGAL" was a prize winner at the Winton Train International Film Competition in Prague and was subsequently screened at the BRNO16 International Film Festival.

In 2013, his film "REN SHAO" won best short at the ASEAN International Film Festival. The film had subsequently traveled to many other festivals in various countries.

Don has worked on more than 25 short films as a screenwriter and director. He currently directs for television and commercial content while still contributing to independent film. His television credits includes Singapore's first English daily long form drama Tanglin.

SANIF OLEK
A graduate of Film & Media Studies from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Singapore) and Media & Communications at Murdoch University (Perth, Australia), Sanif Olek is one of the most accomplished and versatile television and film director from Singapore. Since 1996 Sanif received multiple ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Drama Series’, ‘Best Magazine Series’ awards for his television work. He is the head consultant at reeljuice, a collaborative creative agency actively promoting effective storytelling as means to enlighten the human condition.

His film work have won prizes internationally and been showcased at festivals and arts institutions at museums, ie the MoMA New York, Singapore Art Museum, National Museum of Singapore, National Gallery Singapore.

His debut feature film, Sayang Disayang, received the Special Jury Prize for Best Asian Film at the SalaMindanaw Asian Film Festival (November 2013, Philippines) and subsequently represented Singapore at the 2015 Academy Awards/Oscars (Best Foreign Language Film). His 2nd feature film, Voluptas, world premiered at the Singapore International Film Festival (November 2015).

DERRICK LOO
Previously trained as an economist, Derrick Loo made a major shift in his focus upon graduation, to pursue his passion in filmmaking and cinematography. His early endeavors include writing, directing and shooting his own short films.

Over time, it became clear that his strongest passion lies in cinematography. His ability to create meaningful visuals and aesthetics in his films has led to a number of successful collaborations with other award winning Singaporean filmmakers. With a good eye for details, Derrick has, over the years, lensed a huge variety of projects, including feature films, TV spots, documentary, short narrative projects, MTVs, corporate projects etc, thus developed a unique versatility and established his reputation as a competent cinematographer. In 2009, Derrick was nominated Best Cinematographer in the 5th Asian Festival of First Films. And in 2015, he was nominated and won Best Cinematography (Long Form) at the Apollo Award.
