MBSR: Mindfulness Skills for the Workplace Program
Since its development by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 and inception at the University of Massachusetts’ Stress Reduction Clinic, the widely recognized and researched Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program has helped many people cope with their stress and anxiety levels through the teaching and practice of mindfulness skills to regain emotional balance and well-being.
You might find the MBSR program very helpful and effective if:
> You are experiencing mid to high levels of stress in your professional and/or personal life
> You do not like the way you are responding negatively to the stressors in your life
> You would like to be less reactive and more skilful with your responses
> You want to learn to cope more effectively with unpleasant thoughts and feelings
> You wish to increase awareness of yourself and gain greater clarity of your mind
> You wish to live a more balanced lifestyle and experience more calm and peaceful feelings
> You wish to enhance your relationships through the cultivation of awareness, patience and compassion
The program consists of eight weekly sessions (about 2.5 hours per session) as well as an all-day retreat, and is taught by an approved facilitator in a group setting. Class sizes are kept small to maximize the effectiveness of facilitation and group learning.
Mindfulness techniques taught in the program include formal and informal practices of observing our body, breath and thoughts, as well as gentle stretching movements. The MBSR learning process also includes group discussions and some didactic teaching about stress, all of which are exceptionally important to the participant’s learning in the program.
Mindfulness in the MBSR program is taught in a safe environment emphasizing self-care and the cultivation of moment-to-moment awareness, a non-striving attitude, non-judgmental acceptance, as well as self-compassion.
The MBSR program is designed to encourage active participation and commitment to practice, and so participants are required to follow up on the home practice assigned to them each week.
