From Bernstein to Copland

From Bernstein to Copland

Led by guest conductor Tsung Yeh, the Music Director of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, The Philharmonic Winds celebrates the music of Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland, two of the greatest classical music composers in the history of music from the United States of America.

2018 also marks the centennial of Leonard Bernstein, who is known both as a composer and conductor. Bernstein is famous for his many popular compositions, but perhaps none more so than his musical West Side Story. Audiences can now enjoy the magic of Bernstein's music from theatre and film, brought to you at the Esplanade Concert Hall with Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.

The Philharmonic Winds' very own clarinettist Desmond Chow takes centre stage in Copland's Clarinet Concerto, which was originally written for the legendary jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman. In Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, hear the speeches of Abraham Lincoln recited by acclaimed stage actor Benjamin Chow, who received rave reviews for his role as the ambitious Prince Tun in The Forbidden City (2017) and was awarded Best Supporting Actor at The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards in 2016.

Completing the programme are Bernstein's Slava!, a rousing overture written for conductor Mstislav Rostropovich for the conductor's first season with the National Symphony Orchestra, and music from four movements of Copland's ballet Rodeo, namely Buckaroo Holiday, Corral Nocturne, Saturday Night Waltz and Hoe-Down!
