We live in one of the most beautiful forested landscapes in the country — and one of the most fire-prone. But what if the fires we fear are also essential to the health of the ecosystems we love? This Salon explores the surprising science of wildfire: why forests evolved to burn, how fire shapes the ecology of our mountain communities, and how experts balance letting fire do its work while keeping structures and people safe.

Schedule:
5:30pm Doors open, kid check-in and kids programming starts
6:00pm Seeing Through the Eyes of a Wildfire Expert with Hannah Ohlson 
6:30pm Q&A with Hannah Ohlson
7:00pm Kid pick-up and community discussion

Tickets:
Adults — $10
Kids (ages 4+) — $10

Kids ages 4+ can enjoy hands-on wildfire science activities led by Keystone Science School and a fire truck tour with Summit Fire & EMS firefighters. Activities take place in the side room and just outside the Pavilion. Check-in is 5:30–6:00pm, pickup at 7:00pm. Space is limited — a kids ticket is required.

About the Speaker

Hannah Ohlson is a Fuels Specialist with Summit Fire & EMS, where she leads wildfire mitigation efforts across Summit County. Before joining Summit Fire, she served on U.S. Forest Service Interagency Hotshot and Helitack Crews — some of the most demanding roles in wildland firefighting. She holds operational qualifications in wildfire suppression and prescribed fire, and is currently finishing a Master's in Natural Resources Stewardship from Colorado State University. In early 2026, Hannah was chosen to receive the Wildfire Mitigation Award from the International Association of Fire Chiefs — the highest national honor for wildfire preparedness and mitigation work.


About TEDxBreckenridge Salons

TEDxBreckenridge Salon events are conversational gatherings that bring curious minds together to explore compelling topics. Unlike traditional lectures, Salons emphasize discussion, questions, and the exchange of ideas — creating space for deeper learning and authentic community connection.

This is a small-capacity event designed for genuine conversation and connection. Seating is limited to create an intimate atmosphere where everyone's voice can be heard.

Hot dogs, burgers, veggie burgers, chips, sodas all available for purchase, with food and beverage proceeds supporting Keystone Science School programming throughout the year. Alcoholic beverages available for purchase through the Silverthorne Pavilion bar.
