“Feed me, Seymour!” The musical LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS terrorizes the Ocala Civic Theatre stage from January 29 to February 15.
It’s the 1960s in New York City, and a trio of Skid Row street urchins – Crystal (La’Nya Solomon), Ronnette (Iyanna Lynell), and Chiffon (Jalis Redmond) – have plenty to say (and sing) about what’s going on at the seedy florist shop owned by cranky Mr. Mushnik (Patrick J. Stanley).
Poor young Seymour Krelborn (Timothy C. Rodd), who works at the flower shop, is a bit of a wilted plant himself – but his hidden love for coworker Audrey (Ali Shea Kells) is in full bloom. Alas, Audrey has a boyfriend, sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello (Sebastian Lombardo), who is even more cruel to her than he is to his patients.
After a sudden solar eclipse, a mysterious venus flytrap-like plant appears. Seymour names it Audrey II (voiced by Bennie Radford, operated by puppeteers Cassidy Citron and Joshua Michel), in honor of his unrequited love. He soon discovers some horrifying secrets about the plant – namely that it thrives on blood, can talk to him, and has a mind of its own, as well as a flourishing appetite. Suddenly Seymour has another secret… a big one. But this one may come back to bite him.
With music by the renowned Menken & Ashman duo ("The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin"), this campy, black-comedy musical was an off-Broadway smash hit in 1982, followed by the cult-classic 1986 movie adaptation. Let the show take you somewhere that’s green – and gleefully gruesome. But remember: Don’t feed the plants!
