ABOUT THE SHOW: A terminally woke troupe of theatre artists scrambles to create an elementary-school pageant that somehow manages to celebrate both Turkey Day and Native American Heritage Month – while being historically accurate and offending no one. This may be an impossible task, but these four well-meaning (yet politically insensitive) actors, directors, and teachers bravely bumble through the challenge. Good intentions collide with absurd assumptions in this wickedly funny roast of modern society and performative activism. Penned by Lakota playwright Larissa FastHorse, The Thanksgiving Play made its Broadway debut in 2023 as the first play by a known female Native American playwright produced on Broadway.

ROLES AVAILABLE

Logan: Female, age 25-30. A high school drama teacher and the play’s anxious protagonist. She is desperate to prove her progressive credentials by creating a “woke” Thanksgiving play but is often trapped by her own insecurities and well-intentioned, yet misguided, attempts at being “PC.”

Jaxton: Male, age 30ish. Logan’s boyfriend. A yoga instructor and street performer who overcompensates for his “white heteronormative male privilege” by constantly talking in overly conscious, often ridiculous, liberal jargon.

Caden: Male, age 30ish. An elementary school history teacher. He is deeply committed to historical accuracy but overwhelmed by the conflict between actual history and the mandated, sanitized narratives of Thanksgiving.

Alicia: Female, age 20-30. A Los Angeles-based actress hired because she appears “ethnically ambiguous” and can fulfill the production’s need for a Native American representative, only for her to reveal she is not Indigenous.

PRE-AUDITION WORKSHOP: There will be a free, optional, pre-audition workshop on Sunday, September 13 at 6 p.m. Led by director Vickie Ramirez, this practical workshop is ideal for both newcomers and experienced performers to meet the show’s creative team, learn about the audition process, and practice your audition monologue. You may check out a copy of the script from the box office for one week with a $10 refundable deposit. Please call ahead to make sure a script is in stock. Scripts checked out the week before auditions must be returned by 2 p.m. on Friday, September 11.

No experience is necessary. Newcomers and theatre veterans alike are welcome and encouraged to audition. If you are unable to attend the scheduled auditions, please contact the theatre at (352) 236-2274 about making a separate appointment. Be prepared at auditions to list any conflicts with the rehearsal schedule.

Examples of accommodations made in the past are a wheelchair-accessible audition space, large-print materials, prompters in the audition room, volunteers to help fill out forms, and auditions by appointment.

REHEARSALS & PERFORMANCES: Rehearsals are Sunday through Thursday. Sunday rehearsals are 5:30-9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday rehearsals are 6:30-9:30 p.m. There is a public table read on Wednesday, September 16, then the typical rehearsal schedule will begin on Sunday, September 20. Tech rehearsals are October 21-24, with an all-day tech rehearsal on Saturday, October 24. Dress rehearsals are October 26-28. There will be 15 public performances, Thursdays through Sundays, from October 29 – November 15 at Ocala Civic Theatre.

CIVIC POLICY: All cast and crew ages 16+ will be subject to a background check. This is required for shows with anyone age 15 or younger in the cast.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: Vickie Ramirez (Tuscarora) is a director, playwright, and co-founder of Chukalokoi Native Theater Ensemble with Cochise Anderson, Irene Bedard, and Steve Elm. A theater-maker with strong roots in the community, her work explores Indigenous identity, sovereignty, and survival in contemporary North America. She directed Dawn Jamieson’s Mushole for the Yale Indigenous Performing Arts Project, Husk by Montana Adams for The American Indian Community House at Carnegie Hall, and The FryBread Queen by Carolyn Dunn for Amerinda at Theater for a New City. She wrote and directed Glen Reige 20 WP, which premiered at the Red Nation Film Festival and is debuting on PBS in 2026. She is now writing and co-directing Six Nations: One Fire, an inaugural PAC NYC Democracy Cycle commission with Ty Defoe and Jeanette Harrison, and is also commissioned by Seattle Rep. As a playwright, her work, including Smoke, Standoff at Hwy #37, Pure Native, and Yuchewahkénh (Bitter), has been developed or produced at The Public Theater, Geva Theatre, Native Voices at the Autry, and Pershing Square Signature Center. Standoff at Hwy #37 and Pure Native both earned honorable mentions from The Kilroys, and she won the NNPN Smith Prize for Political Theater in 2020 for Yuchewahkénh (Bitter). She was the first Indigenous playwright to join the Public Theater’s Emerging Writers’ Group and is a current resident at New York’s New Dramatists. Beyond the stage, Vickie mentors emerging artists, develops arts education initiatives, and is developing projects for film and television, extending Indigenous storytelling across generations and artistic forms.
