ATANARJUAT: THE FAST RUNNER [ᐊᑕᓈᕐᔪᐊᑦ] - 25th Anniversary

Adapted from an ancient folk epic, this landmark film, created by Canadian filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk with a nearly all-Inuit cast and crew, was the first feature ever made entirely in the Inuktitut language, an unconventional saga shot on early video over the course of six months above the Arctic Circle. Utterly captivating, ATANARJUAT follows the adventures of a desperate Inuk man who is cast out of his tribe after being wrongly accused of attempted murder. Multigenerational in scope, the film adheres to a humane psychological realism even within its mythological framework. It won the Caméra d’Or for best first feature at the 2001 Cannes International Film Festival. (Note adapted from the Museum of the Moving Image.)

In Inuktitut with English subtitles. RATED R

“A masterpiece […] An extraordinary film, a work of narrative sweep and visual beauty that honors the history of the art form even as it extends its perspective.” – A.O. Scott, The New York Times
