Now in its 38th year, the Showcase is bringing some of the very best of European cinema to the Washington area — from festival favorites and box-office hits to this year’s official Oscar® submissions. The full lineup includes 54 films from all 27 member states, six U.S. premieres and 12 Best International Feature Film Oscar® submissions. Romania is represented by two movies including Dracula directed by Radu Jude which will be shown on Sunday, December 07 at 7:45 pm, Tuesday, December 09 at 3:30 pm and on Thursday, December 11, 2025 at 8:40 pm at AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center located at 8633 Colesville Road in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Testing the limits of good taste, Romanian provocateur Radu Jude turns the legend of Dracula on its head with this visionary, metatextual reimagining of the world’s most famous vampire. With a bad case of writer’s block, a young Romanian filmmaker turns to AI to come up with a version of Dracula that is destined to be a surefire hit. Toying with the chatbot, he generates 12 unique versions, each more outrageous than the last. They draw inspiration from everything from Murnau and Coppola’s takes on the Dracula mythos to the historical accounts of Vlad the Impaler — nothing is sacred. Made in tandem with Jude’s KONTINENTAL ’25 (also screening in the Showcase), the maximalist Dracula overflows with sex, blood and bawdy humor, but, like the best of Jude’s work, it makes pointed political commentary about Romania’s past, present and future. –Josh Gardner
