Battles for New York: Kip's Bay and Harlem Heights, 1776

Fort Devens Museum, 3rd Floor, 94 Jackson Road, Devens

Join us as we welcome back Mark Nichipor to continue his exploration of the Revolutionary War.

Following his defeat at the Battle of Long Island 27 August 1776 General George Washington was able to save his army by withdrawing to Manhattan Island. While his command and Congress debated to defend or evacuate New York City the American army built fortification across Harlem Heights and along the islands shore. British General William Howe planned his next move; a major amphibious operation to land on Manhattan Island and capture New York City.

Morningside heights, Murray Hill, Grants Tomb and Columbia University are familiar sites to both visitors and residents of New York City. But in 1776 they appeared radically different from how they look today. Farm fields, orchards and gardens filled these areas. The sites of the battle of Manhattan are still there and can be found as we explore these two day battles. What did landing craft look like and how did they operate in the 18th century? Did Mrs. Murray really save Washington's army because of her tea party for British officers? And did Washington truly lose his temper and stomp on his hat? Learn more about these and other fascinating topics as we explore the Battles of Kip's Bay and Harlem Heights.

Mark Nichipor is a local historian interested in the Colonial and Revolutionary history of New England. He was a National Park Service Ranger at Revolutionary War sites until retiring after nearly thirty years. He served as an instructor in the NPS Historic Weapons Safety Program and ran The Staff Ride programs for military visiting Minute Man and Bunker Hill parks. He has a number of published articles on Revolutionary War History.

The museum is open from 10 AM to 3 PM on April 18th with the program at 1:00. Free and Open to the Public. Accessible.
