Rhubarb #83 Gaia Holmes + open mic
Wednesday 30 July 2025
@The Triangle, 47 Bradford Rd, Shipley BD18 3DS
7pm for 7.30 start
Pay-as-you-feel
Join us for our 83rd Rhubarb at The Triangle, with guest author Gaia Holmes, plus our ever-wonderful open mic for new writing.
Gaia Holmes has been a gallery attendant, a cleaner, a lecturer, a lollipop lady and a busker and has lived in churches, caves, deserted beach houses, tall terraces and caravans. Now she is a creative writing tutor and pet/house sitter and lives in Halifax in a tiny flat above the tree line on the top floor of a ramshackle Georgian mansion that Dorothy and William Wordsworth used to visit.
Gaia is the author of 3 poetry collections, 'Dr James Graham’s Celestial Bed', 'Lifting The Piano With One Hand' and 'Where The Road Runs Out' (Comma Press).
In February 2023, Gaia received a prestigious award from Arts Foundation Futures for ‘writing about place’. The award enabled her to spend much of the year working on her debut collection of short stories called ‘He Used To Do Dangerous Things’, which was published in October 2024.
“The stories in the collection are very ‘place oriented’” She says. “They explore themes of loneliness, compassion, small acts of human kindness, power cuts, magpies, kitchen sink magic and frozen turkeys!”

Rhubarb is a pay-as-you feel event that welcomes poetry & prose readers on an open mic in the first half, followed by a headline set from an invited guest. If you want to read on the open mic, please book with us when you arrive. We generally offer 10 open mic slots of up to 4 minutes (squeezing in a few extras when we can). As always, listeners are also very welcome.
