This year’s Sheridan Hometown Days theme, “Preserving the Past & Protecting the Future,” feels especially meaningful to us at SHACC because it reflects something deeply important about both childhood and community.

To us, preserving the past is not about resisting change. It is about holding onto the values, traditions, and connections that give communities their heart. It is about remembering what it feels like to truly belong somewhere. It is children running through the grass at community events, neighbors recognizing one another, families gathering together, stories being passed down, and childhood being filled with play, imagination, wonder, and connection instead of constant pressure to grow up too fast.

In many ways, early childhood education sits right in the middle of preserving the past and protecting the future. Every day, we witness how important relationships, community support, and meaningful experiences are in shaping children’s lives. The traditions we continue, the kindness we model, the spaces we create, and the way we care for one another all become part of the foundation children carry with them into the future.

Protecting the future means understanding that the children growing up in our community today will someday become the people shaping it tomorrow.
