Includes a classical waka recitation.About this EventPoetic Pilgrimages and TōhokuWhile the topics and diction of waka (classical Japanese poetry) were formalised by the court nobility of Heian-kyō (Kyoto), the poetry’s geographic reach extended across the Japanese archipelago. Consequently, place names far removed from the capital frequently appeared in courtly compositions. As these poems became canonised as classical literature, later poets grew increasingly interested in the physical landscapes behind the verse. This curiosity led practitioners to embark on journeys to these sites—known as utamakura (‘poem pillows’)—to experience the scenery firsthand.By the early modern period, as the poetic community diversified to include samurai and townsfolk, the regions associated with these utamakura began leveraging them to forge distinct local identities. The Sendai domain in north-east Japan (Tōhoku), in particular, was notable for its active role in cultivating and maintaining these poetic sites. This presentation examines the interplay between ancient verse and physical geography, the history of poetic pilgrimage, and the strategic construction of utamakura within the Sendai domain. Coinciding with the fifteenth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, this talk also reflects on the enduring relationship between the people of Tōhoku and their natural environment from the ninth century to the present day.This talk will be delivered in Japanese with English interpretation.It takes place in the Conference Room, Alfred Denney Building, University of Sheffield.To be followed by:A Taste of WakaDr Mitarai will give a formal recitation of selected classical Japanese poems to give a flavour of the topics, sentiments and language through which court poets expressed their views of the natural and social worlds.
