Harp and a Monkey perform 'War Stories'
Part of our Remembrance Sunday Events
We are delighted to announce a special matinee performance by the award-winning folk song and storytelling trio Harp and a Monkey.
As part of our annual remembrance events, the outfit are going to perform their acclaimed ‘War Stories’ show at 3pm on Sunday, November 9, in our evocative Samuel Worth Chapel.
Originally commissioned by the Arts Council and Western Front Association to mark the centenary of the First World War, this unique and acclaimed performance features sound recordings of people who lived through the Great War, traditional and original songs about lesser-known aspects of the conflict, wall projections, and humorous and poignant tales by band frontman and respected WW1 historian and author Martin Purdy.
The trio only perform this show in full a handful of times each year, so this is a rare chance to see why It has continued to garner huge critical acclaim since its first appearance - and why the likes of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission regularly get them to perform it at their largest British cemetery in Surrey.
Here are just some of the things to have been said about the ‘War Stories’ show… “Bold and brilliant” (The Observer); “Brilliant.” (BBC Radio 2 Folk Show); “Excellent.” (The Guardian);
“Courageous, demanding and ultimately satisfying.” (FolkRadioUK);
“A unique and unmissable sonic monument.” (RootsWorld, USA); “The most beautiful songs ever made on this theme.” (AltCountry, Germany).
Suitable for all ages, this is not one to be missed!
