Wednesday had just suffered their first relegation from the top flight of English football, while also leaving their Olive Grove home and relocating away from the city centre to what was then a non-footballing district of Sheffield.Langley proved to be an exceptional leader. In his first season as captain he guided the team back to the top division, and just a few years later led Wednesday to their first Football League championship in 1902–03.A true stalwart of the club, Langley won the FA Cup once and the Football League twice during his playing career with Sheffield Wednesday.After retiring as a player, he went on to become a respected and pragmatic football manager.
