Footnote / Background Information A Christian Women-Led Global Prayer Movement Theme: “I Will Give You Rest: Come” (Matthew 11:28–30) The World Day of Prayer (WDP) 2026 invites people of all ages and backgrounds to join a global movement of prayer, reflection, and learning led by Christian women around the world. For 2026, the worship service has been prepared by the women of Nigeria, a West African nation known for its rich cultural heritage, diverse ecosystems, and deep Christian faith. Through prayer, scripture, and storytelling, participants are invited to reflect on the theme “I will give you rest: come” and to learn about Nigeria’s history, culture, and current concerns. The World Day of Prayer is an international, ecumenical movement that enables people worldwide to hear the voices, hopes, concerns, and prayers of women from different cultures and traditions. Preparation for each service begins several years in advance, with women from the selected country choosing the theme and writing the service. Once completed, the service is submitted to the World Day of Prayer International Committee in New York for translation and distribution to National Committees around the world. In Canada, the service is reviewed and prepared for use by the Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada, then shared nationally, regionally, and locally. On or near the first Friday of March, churches and communities gather to celebrate the service prepared by the women of Nigeria.
