Imagine billions of years of storytelling in one room. You might picture thousands of bookcases, millions of hours of audio logs or an endless binder of every photo ever taken. For Lenka Clayton and Phillip Andrew Lewis, eons of storytelling can be found in something far more unassuming like, say, a rock.

Enter the world of Wisconsin geology at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center on September 18 for a free lecture by geologist and Lawrence University Professor Marcia Bjornerud as she peels back the layers of Wisconsin geological history alongside Clayton and Lewis' Rock Fade, a stunning large-scale installation that stretches deep into the past, arranging time in terms of stones and sand.

Rock Fade arranges stones in a perfect line, from a massive boulder down to a single grain, inviting visitors to reckon with the scope and scale of geological time, which—despite our attempts to shape, measure and arrange it—dwarfs even the grandest of human designs.

The lecture by Professor Bjornerud is open to the public, and is part of the statewide Wisconsin History Makers Tour, which brings programming to communities across Wisconsin in partnership with the new Wisconsin History Center opening in Madison. The History Makers Tour is presented by Culver's and is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
