The singers that make up the award-winning Victoria B.C. based Balkan Babes are dedicated to both the intricate music of the Balkan region, and to the challenging and highly rewarding process of operating as a collective, with no director.  Drawn to the penetrating harmonies, asymmetric rhythms, unusual ornamentations and powerful emotions that characterize the rich and timeless folk music of Eastern Europe, Balkan Babes strive for an authentic sound in vocal production and pronunciation, while opening up many songs to their own interpretations and arrangements.
Singing together for over 25 years, Balkan Babes have released three full length records since 1999 including Divna in 2008; Volio in 2012; and Zajedno in 2019, all to warm reviews. The albums explore themes of love, life, longing, and loss, bridging cultures and times and making accessible the diverse musical traditions of the Balkans to music lovers near and far.
Balkan Babes are proud to be active members of Vancouver Island’s music, arts and culture communities and are excited to present selections from these captivating musical traditions to the audience on November 21st.
 
 
 
NOVO DROM
Novo Drom, meaning New Road in Slavic and Romani, is a musical adventure which interweaves Balkan culture, Romani sound, and a West Coast vibe. They formed in 2019 out of a desire to share their love of and expertise with these captivating genres. The trio focuses on blending their voices and instruments to transport their audience to another time and place. Combining pulsing energy, complex rhythms and intricate three part harmonies, Novo Drom creates a multi-layered free-spirited sound for all ears to enjoy! www.novodromband.com
