Joseph Green Butler Jr. (1850–1927) rose from modest beginnings to become a central force in the American steel industry. Beginning his career in iron manufacturing, he went on to co-found the Eagle Iron and Steel Company and played a significant role in the growth of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, helping to establish Youngstown, Ohio as a powerhouse of industrial production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lambert’s work explores Butler’s business strategies, leadership style, and relationships with other industrial leaders during a pivotal era in American economic history. Beyond industry, Butler was a passionate advocate for culture and education. In 1919, he founded the Butler Institute of American Art—the first museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to American art—reflecting his belief that art should be accessible to the public.
