Set on a windswept island in 18th-century France, the film follows Marianne, a painter secretly commissioned to create a wedding portrait of the reluctant and mysterious Héloïse. As the two women grow closer, their bond deepens into a powerful romance—a fleeting yet unforgettable moment suspended in time. With stunning cinematography, sparse dialogue, and aching intimacy, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a luminous meditation on memory, desire, and the enduring impact of love.
Please note: Portrait of a Lady on Fire is rated R for sexual content, drug use, and sensitive content. Viewer discretion is advised.
The lover’s choice / The poet’s choice
The films in this series examine how queer love changes us. They evoke the ambiguity and fluidity of life, art and identity, celebrating that these concepts are not fixed but rather in constant flux.
The first two films in the series explore queer love through "folie á deux," the French term for “madness of two,” a shared psychosis or shared delusional beliefs transmitted between two people. In this instance two lovers. I.e. the lover’s choice. Absurd and at times impulsive, this representation of love is uninhibited and reckless but never without passion.
