The Col Sampson Trial, is back on the calendar!
Sunday December 7, 2025.
Our annual Hartwell MCC observed trial is to be held on Sunday December 7 at 6 Ross Road Gruyere, in the beautiful Yarra Valley and less than one hour east of the Melbourne CBD.
It is a very casual day in the dirt. Sign on at 8.30am and we kick off at 9am. For club members with a M.A. competition licence, the entry fee is $100. If you need a one event licence you can organise one through ridernet when you enter the event. If you have an M.A. competition licence, you can enter through ridernet or on the day. Please let us know (for catering purposes) if you are coming to ride or to spectate and laugh at your mates, as we will be supplying a bbq lunch.
If you have never done an observed trial, we run 10 tight sections before lunch and then do the same sections from the reverse direction after lunch, just to make the challenge more interesting. You will attempt to navigate logs and wombat holes and off camber descents and ascents, all at not much more than walking pace. Bring along your dirt bike of any description, even your old pit bike. There is a class for bonafide Trials bikes, road/ trail, MX, road bike (if you are game) and side car. Then we have our control bike. The mighty 1981 Suzuki TF 125 agi bike. She is a rough old girl, but surprisingly capable. As well as riding your own bike through the sections, all competitors can elect to ride the control bike which is a real leveller of talent.
Those that wish to come up on Saturday arvo and camp the night are welcome. There are plenty of camping spots and if the weather is conducive to it, we can have a bonfire.
The Col Sampson trial has been an institution with the Hartwell club for Donkey’s years and was named after one of our founding members. Unfortunately we haven’t had one for 5 years, but hopefully we will go back to yearly events. All that come have a great time and hopefully we gain a few new faces this event.
Don’t think; ‘I am no gun trials rider, so I won’t enter the event’.
If you can ride a trail bike and you are willing to have a crack, you will fit right in and have a great day out.
Bring along your mates and if you don’t have any mates or a bike, we can help you out on the day. A great social day with a mild level of competitiveness.
