This practical session offers a perfect introduction to carving, combining traditional skills with a thoughtful approach to materials and making.

Using two different carving knives, participants will create a wooden spoon of their own design while learning the fundamentals of safe tool use and understanding wood grain direction. Spoon carving is how Ben learned many of the skills he now applies daily in his sculptural and furniture work, and it provides an excellent foundation for anyone interested in working with wood.

Ben’s practice centres on working with zero-value materials and locally sourced lumber, encouraging participants to think differently about materials, waste, and longevity. Throughout the workshop, he will share practical techniques alongside insights from his own creative journey.

You will learn:

How to mark out your spoon
The three basic cuts and techniques used in hand carving
Knife safety
Basic knife sharpening and tool maintenance
Sanding tips and common watch-outs
By the end of the session, you will leave with your own hand-carved wooden spoon and the core skills needed to continue carving and creating wooden objects at home.

This workshop is ideal for beginners and anyone curious about traditional craft skills, offering a relaxed and rewarding introduction to wood carving in a beautiful setting.

This workshop starts at 1pm and as it includes garden entry, ticket holders are welcome to arrive early (we open at 10am) to wonder around the garden, and enjoy lunch in our tearoom before the session starts.
