The Otford Wassail
A wassail ceremony is a traditional midwinter ritual, especially associated with cider-apple orchards in southern England, intended to bless the trees and ensure a good harvest in the coming year.
The Otford Wassail will take place on Saturday 17th January (‘Old Twelvey’). Join us for a lively revival of this ancient orchard tradition as we gather to bless Otford Heritage Orchard's trees and wish for a fruitful harvest and good health in the year ahead. (Sunset is 16:23 and it will get dark about 30 minutes later – say 17:00h.)
We will meet on the Village Green at 16:30h and process to the Heritage Orchard on Palace Field. At the chosen “best” apple tree, we will sing wassail songs (words provided!), drink mulled cider, and place cider-soaked toast in the branches or at the roots as an offering to tree spirits and as a charm for fertility.
